After being in the mac wilderness for the last 8 years I have decided for a number of reasons to move back to the pc land.
After this long I dont understand the list and specifications of processors any more they dont seem as simple as I remember them ie 600mHZ faster than a 500 isnt around any more and the chips all have different trade/family names.
Help!
I am after a laptop and want to hack and play online games any Ideas on what the processors I should be looking for are called and what grafix cards etc.
Processors are ranked now not only by processor speed like 1.8ghz vs. 2.2ghz but also by "fsb" or front side bus speed and cache. A 1.8ghz can be faster then a 2.2ghz if it has a higher "fsb" and more cache. I just went with a new desktop and bought one with a dual-core processor. Graphics cards if you're gonna game I would think you would want nothing less then 256mb for your card.
What kinda of games are you expecting to play Cadmium? Let me know because, graphics cards is definitely something I am an expert in . As for the processor you should get a core 2 duo 2.0ghz at least. Everything else above that is only if you are into tasks such as video editing, otherwise you wont see much of a difference(excluding Quad cores if coarse).
I agree, I'd stick to the duel core proscessors, & if you ever want to goto a 64 bit os, they're a must. are you also upgrading the mobo ? if so, I'd suggest something that uses either ddr or ddr2 ram & some will even support both !!!
Wow thanks for the responce guys, that really helps I know understand about the fsr intervention it makes for a large pad of paper for making comparisons.
_889 I am looking to play some of the newer massive multiplayer games, first person shooters and the like also some of the world of warcraft style games. Or anything else if people have any suggestions.
Okay first thing, What is your price range? How much hard drive storage do you want? How much Ram do you want? What size notebook do you want?
*This is all info for laptops as you stated in your first post you wanted
As for the graphics card the 8600 gt, 8700 gt, 7950 gtx, are your prime choices for a notebook. You can also go for an SLI notebook, which is dual graphics cards, but its usually in 2200-4000+ range.
*The 8600gt is a DX-10 card that will give you med-high setting in todays games, and is the most powerful graphics card in 15" inch notebooks(excluding the quadro 570m, which is a slightly faster workstation card) Its recommended you get a 8600gt with ddr3 ram(Is the fastest ram for a gaming card currently). The ram specifically ranges from 128-256mb. 256 will give you higher resolutions and higher fps(In other words less lag/hiccups in games)
*The 8700gt is the fastest DX-10 card you can buy and its only in 17" notebooks. It can play games at higher resolutions and provides mostly high settings for newer games. It comes in 256-512mb ddr3 I believe.
*The 7950 gtx is a DX-9 card in 17" notebooks only. It wont give you the better special effects that a DX-10 card will give, but its the most powerful notebook card available. It will run almost any game you throw at it at high settings. It comes in 512 ddr3 ram.
All of these card will play WoW, and games like it.....
Remember you should get a 2.0ghz core2 duo Processor
*There is 8800m/8700 gtx card (DX-10) coming out soon(December-early January) it will be most likely the most powerful card out at its time. More powerful than the 7950 gtx, and will also offer the new DX-10 visuals.
Hi _889, my budget is about $1500 to $2000 but as cheap as possible a 15 or a 17" would be fine but I wouldnt want to go smaller or larger. Ram 1-2gig and a 160gig hard drive would be good but I would bend to get a good deal.

Thanks again for your advice
For a 15" you might want to consider an:
Asus G1
Best places to buy would be:
Newegg.com
Gentech: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Asus c90
xoticpc.com
There are a lot of good choices next to those that are in your price range.
You might also want to look at Lenovo, they have a huge 25% off on their notebooks, the T61p specifically which may be possibly more powerful than either of these and for the time being cheaper. Or you can go with the Dell Vostro 1500-- might be the weakest one.
