Most people can't see a difference between 720p and 1080p, sometimes crediting the former with higher resolution (definitely higher per-pixel sharpness). I have expected TV makers to unveil 1440p (the so-called "quad HD", 2560x1440, four times the 720p) sometime next year for 60" and larger models, but that's pretty much it.

Nobody's gonna see the difference, production yields will go down, dynamic range will go down.

Plus, what are people going to connect those UHDTVs to? Unless you have a high-quality optic fibre going directly to your home, you won't have the bandwidth to carry that signal -- there's not enough in the air. Even given inevitable advances in compression, nothing less than half of today's compression ratios is realistically possible with the same quality, so a signal 16x the resolution will still take the bandwidth of 8 channels, not even factoring in the subcarrier for sound. People would rather have 8 1080p channels than one 8K channel that costs them fifty times more money and never shows anything they want to watch.

And if they decide to make compression more aggressive -- well, they'll get rid of dynamic range, fine details and color saturation, making UHDTVs an exercise in futility.

BTW, 22.2 sound? Last I remember, the central speaker is necessarily one and only one (=central) to allow real 3D sound. They'll make two of them now? Is there going to be a "central" speaker after that? A rear speaker doesn't make sense (two are necessary), top and bottom speakers don't make sense either.

Oh, and I can't wait to see 24 speakers in a living room -- guess the furniture's gotta go.

The .2 is subwoofers. That's not a change, there are already 7.2 and 8.2 systems. Of course the UHD is way rediculous now, and is many years away, but I bet a 60"+ wide screen HD TV seemed way rediculosu not too long ago . Wait until they connect to Skynet, and it becomes aware...

If they can do it, then why not? I mean if people can enhance their life, then why deny it?
