Great Idea to Discourage Leechers - 05-29-2004, 05:44 PM

This is idea might be great for discouraging leechers from viewing posts till they have replied.

I saw this on another forum, instead of being able to see the pass dump in the first post, this message was there instead:

[REPLY TO SEE HIDDEN MESSAGE]

Sure enough, when you do say thanks in advance, you can view all the passes. What do you think?

We have seen this everywhere, and I could install it if I wanted to. I think users should have a free choice whether they reply to a post based on its contet... I dont think the crackers here would like it either if they got a million spammed "Thanks" replys just so that they can view the passes... That doest mean anything to us.. We appreciate replys when you are not forced to do so, but do it because you really appreciate the fact that a pass poster spent the time to crack these passes for the rest of the community.

So in short I won't be adding this hack, but as usuall I will remove lurkers and leechers on a regular basis from the SS database...

Writing "thanks" in every thread without even reading it, is considered spamming- therefore this idea would only force everyone to spam.

Thanking someone is your way of letting them know you enjoyed their work- which you couldn't very well have enjoyed if you haven't seen it yet.

How will you tell the difference between a sincere "thank you" and a thanks post that was written just to see the contents?

i personally dont like "lockdown" on boards... it forces ppl to reply to "leech" if u install lockdown u tend to see nothing but fake thankyous... thanx thnx ty etc.

.. just adding a few thoughts here:

The best is to convey the idea the forum is an active forum, requiring posts to stay alive - hence the need of active posters and repliers. An active brass squad (as this forums hosts) removing lurkers, leechers and stealers sends both the lazy f***er out the backdoor - and gives the rest of the members the signal an active board needs.

But in one particular area is the <hide hack> a good idea ! Implement it in the "request section", but code it so that the only one who can see it is the thread starter !

I.e: if the requester doesn't reply he don't get the pass.

once again, that gets u a lot of ungratful thanks... if your gonna use lockdown or somthing like it. u might want to implement a "dead PW" button too.(somone presses it and it report it to the poster, so he/she can reveiw it. u could also make it so the person only gets on notification, instead of a ton of spam from numerous ppl reporting the bad link.)

lock down is really only good for one thing, tracking members who use those PWs.
