i agree it's a good idea to have more personalised thanks, but with threads where a user will upload a whole load of content such as spanishfly's teen thread, it would tidy the thread up and make it easier to access the content

Benefits of having a thanks button are it prevents unnecessary "bumping" of an old thread and keeps the thread cleaner. I've seen it in use on other boards and I think it actually encourages "leechers" to be a little more active, because by button press, they can indicate thanks with little effort so they might do so more often, as even leechers know that thanks encourage people to post more.
Since someone can still manually thank someone, having both options I think is a great way to do things.

i think it would be better to have a thanks button. this will keep threads short instead of havin 20 pages where people just write thanks. makes sense

Yes! I Like A Thanks - 08-04-2009, 09:28 AM

Yes! I like to be 'thanked'

I believe if you are going to submit a reply to a thread it should be a contribution to the thread...an expansion of an idea or the theme, or the addition of extra information...something of worth to share with other members

I may go to a posting and want to show my appreciation of what has been presented...at the moment I type in a small sentence as thanks... always trying to be a bit different from what others have typed..but I don't have anything extra to contribute, I just want to say 'thanks'

There seems to be some who press the 'Submit Reply' in order to retain or improve their member status...at times I have fealt guilty of this but I just wanted to say 'thanks'...by pressing a 'thanks' button there should be no impact on member status as there is no true contribution to the forum, just a mark of appreciation

At other forums, where I have posted, I found that the 'Thanks' button a better gauge of the level of appreciation from members

Here are some statistics for you to share and evaluate...these refer to my (yes my!) thread, which I believe is popular, of OfficeFantasy2, to the end of July 2009

My total posts: 35
My total files: 164
Total replies: 49 by 32 members
Total visits: over 7,000 (average 1,000 per week)
Total Downloads: over 3,000 (from Rapidshare)...only posted at SSF

Yes! I like a 'Thanks' because I contribute and I share

One other option (available on other boards as well) is a 'reputation' or 'karma' system. People can still make their thanks posts if they want, or just donate some sort of 'points'.

i will have to agree; how hard is it to thank someone? not bashing the OP, but just saying, it takes the crackers a lot more work and time to do it than it is for us to say thanks
