Private message length - 01-15-2009, 10:59 PM

Ok - now I realise that most of my posts can be somewhat on the verbose side - and there's always the tendency to 'go off on one' .... but I do seem to be coming across an error similar to this (when attempting to send a private message) on more than a few occassions recently:

Quote:
The following errors occurred when this message was submitted:

1. The text that you have entered is too long (4096 characters). Please shorten it to 3000 characters long.
There doesn't seem to be the same restriction (at least not at this 3000 character value) on the board posts - so can someone either

- up this 3000 limit
- explain why it's fairly low
- tell me to quit complaining and stop writing so damn much?

Gracias

good point you brought up....

but i think you should really shorten it up!!
having 4000 or more characters is alot
so try to shorten it to the max of 3000
or send two pms

cheers

Robot should be able to up the limit, not sure if he can actually, but he is the man to ask for it

Its that low, cause we dont really expect anyone to write more than that really, even when i mass PM members, i never get that high, cept for when i Provide DethPhunk with some links

also, if members take up mass PM's, the space available for them on the server would have to be increased.

lastly, Quit complaining and stop writing that Much

Basically, when Robot comes online, i will try and remind him to see this topic and give a full explaination

Say someone makes a post of 2500ish to me. Several pertinent parts have to be quoted (to maintain context) and, of course, some quite detailed replies.

Sure, I could split this over several PMs ... but that'll open up more than a few simultaneous threads which could/would quickly overlap.

If there's some sort of legitimate reason then fair enough .... but if not, then there are only points in the 'pro' column?

Be quite stony, it's not Rhino's faults you never send long messages.
Anyways, I came across the limit several times and when you have to split the message into several it becomes annoying, since you have to wait between the messages all the time.
I could imagine that for each message a certain amount of space has to be reserved on the server and the limit could stem from there.
If I see Robot I'll ask him about it, I think I already got the position of impertinent brat anyways

Well, I personally think that private messages are meant for short and simple communication between members, much like facebook that blocks you if you use their pm system as a chat, I think it applies here as well.

If you want to write short stories, maybe the pm system is not for you my good friend, personally I think that 3000 characters (which are roughly 500 words) are enough - I never even knew there was a limit until now btw.

Not much, but Robot has increased the PM limit to 5000 characters. Hope this is enough for you

Well, it has to help thanks. I guess I'll try to stick to option 3

Still curious about the need for a limit though
