I wish to highlight that we have a problem with thread necromancy in this forum. I mean look at this thread. Its kinda annoying I say.

To avoid such problem reoccurring in the future, i suggest we have a rule aginst thread necromancy. Thread necromancers will be penalized just like PM pass requesters.
There is no significant of Life itself without Rock and Metal!
i do agree there should be something done, but then there will also be a limit on how old a thread has to be

I dont think its quite as severe as PM'ing for a request, but its a pain in the ass....some people have a genuine interest in these old threads... so it all depends
Disagree. Feel as staff we should monitor and only step in when really required when it comes to these things. Most active members here started with making mistakes and continued here in spite of the penalties. Let's not add more barriers to overcome and don't turn into a police force here.
I like the option to see old threads revived by something interesting or funny and take the dumb replies for taken. Sometimes a bit of a nuisance, but it keeps the forum lively in its own way.

It depends on the thread and the issues it covers, some threads simply went into obscurity because the thread starter left or was banned, and it's a reasonable bet, that over time, someone will find it and revive it.
However, some threads definitely need closing as they're no longer relevant, i.e. software that's so far out of date it doesn't warrant being left open, dead link threads are the same.
One thread that was brought to my attention was a 5 yr old request that a new member said he'd try to fill, unfortunately for him, the requester had been banned anyway.
I think it good in some ways that pass dumps are left open as it gives novice crackers a chance to see the advances made in website security over a period of time, who knows, maybe someone will find an actually working pass.
All in all, threads outside of a certain time scale are no longer needed, thus they should be archived and placed in their own category, that way we can ignore them.

i agree with the pass suggestion and requests, but say topics which are only applicable for a certain time frame, I.E elections, whose next president etc at some point should have a close date

I agree this is annoying in some cases, however, this would involve a lot of work for mods in selecting which threads should be closed. Plus possible confrontations for closing a thread that maybe should be left open. I really agree with ari here, acting like police is never the best option for a forum as it usually leads to unnecessary rebellion. We should only enforce rules when absolutely necessary imho.
