New games vs Oldie Games - 03-01-2007, 09:44 PM

Friends, I was wondering what is inside the minds of the game designers' from the last 5 years I ask you this question because I manage to get a copy of a program call DosBox which allows me to play my old games, damm Windows XP
A few years ago, 10 years approximately, were a lot of really good games that they rely their quality in the plot, just to name a few: Alone in the Dark, Shadow of the Comet, Veil of Darkness and all the greatest adventures of Guybrush Threpwood in Monkey Island, but now..... the history is different
Every game now a days is only about fighting by turns or in the worst cases shooters, they have no plot at all, and I am talking only about the PC games. Nowadays we have great Accelerator Cards, Pentium's IV and all that crap, but the games are only becoming shooters to play online and they not even make you think.
Maybe a lot of friends in this forum are feeling the mood for all those great games that were in our PC's a decade ago.
Any comments about your favorite oldie game?

Well, times have changed, unfortunately. What gets most people's attention are the graphics of a video game. After that, it's the smooth animation and weapons a person can use. I mean people like to have many options in a video game. To be able to unlock a character and play him or her, to have different suits or body armor, have more abilities as the game progresses, etc... The story nowadays is usually similar to other games so it's become an afterthough. But yeah, I agree with you, I miss those games that are unique and doesn't follow the same pattern as all the other video games. As for my favorite oldie games, I'd have to say Alone in the Dark and Clock Tower. Those were the types of games I liked. I liked having to walk around all over the place and solve mysteries. And then when you see the boss, your ass has to either run away from it or get a weapon to stand a chance against it. I'd be like oh shittttt, gotta run now, low on energy. And then they're going after you and you're thinking where the hell to go to hide. Man those were the days.

I must admit, I'm one of those people . For me it's not about the story line anymore because they are all basically the same and it's kind of hard to come up with a new story line when everything has been done already.

I love shooter and RTS games like (Unreal Tournament 3 and Supreme Commander). Now it's all about what new features can designers bring to the game and do what's never been done before. People want more to do, graphics to look better and the game to be longer. I used to be the champ at Battlefield 2, I went by the name SFC.BloodHound and always had the most kills but stop playing it because i lost my desktop but I'll be back with a new system in a month or 2 to kick some more a$$.

the best thing about new games is the reaisticness of them, or for me anyway, just to see how real they can get it, like halflife 2 was a really nice one

One of the better newer games has to the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic saga because they incorporate a balanced level of action vs. story. I hear that the Silent Hill series is really cool. Other than that, I can't really say...maybe the Resident Evil series...

I loved the King's Quest Series (i STILL remember that game till this day), Ultima VII : The Black Gate, and Starcraft (that was about 9 years old, so I think it qualifies as an oldie!) You are so right in your original post about these new games just sucking and relying too heavily on eye candy and not enough on depth.

I'd blame it just on the focus of people in general....graphics and all are what sells for some reason, but if you make a game that doesn't necessarily need an uber beefy graphics card for the most part (depending on the settings) chances are the story and such are going to be pretty good.

I love the GTA games for just that reason, the missions on VC and SA were all very unique and entertaining throughout the whole game. Although, some of them got frustrating (the flying missions and the racing ones sometimes if they were really hard) but overall it's a good game. I think they need to branch out the missions to accomidate different tastes in missions, if you know what i mean? I hated and haven't finished the missions for Zero and his RC shop of D&D crap =/
