Mos Def is definantly the man, he is just so original and does his own thing, he could easily be all over that MTV stuff and realesing Kanye-West ish hits, but the man does what he does and is more than a rapper, he is a poet.
Also I like me some Dead Prez, ICP, Luda, and I might get alot of crap for this, but I still think oldschool Eminem was one of the greatest rappers in the world.
Listen to his old freestyles, no one can touch them man. Seriously. He just got to rich and too lazy.
Oh yeah, and Jay-Z is a great lyricist and an entrepreneur of sorts but he doesn't sound good live, and thats a big deal to me
Wow, I'm pretty impressed... We have some true Hip-Hop heads here. Although, I was a bit surprised to see ICP in the same post mentioning emceez like Dead Prez, and Mos Def.
In my lifetime...I would have to say that Rakim Allah is the greatest MC of all time. Anybody can rap, but MCing is rapping, persona, and swagger. 2 Pac had all of this, but to me he was an entertainer vs a rapper. I think Biggie was number 2. He was only in the limelight for 5 years and his lyrics, today, still sounds better than what's out here now. Jay Z #3. Most people would say he's #1...I can't argue with that. He's the king of the "now" generation. That's like trying to compare Michael Jordan vs Dr. J. Two different eras. #4 would be Nas...15 years in the spotlight, 10 albums deep. Most Hip Hop artists fade away after their second album...whether it be from mismanagement of money, or multiple run-ins with the Law. Nas has stood the test of time, even Jay Z signed him to Def Jam records. I'm partial to number 5, and that's Scarface, maybe because I live here in Houston (Southside), but besides that...the Geto Boys sold millions with little to no airplay because of their abusive language and raw Southern approach. I have carefully listened to rappers in many interviews and when asked who they like most as an MC, and the name Scarface has surfaced by the Kings of Rap...Tupac, Biggie, Nas, Jay Z and many, many more. That's my take on it! Thanks for starting this post.
I think that Big L is the most underrated top 10 rapper. Had he not been mistaken for his brother, he may still be rapping and really shutting down the crap put out today. Tupac and Biggie still top my list, but Big L is for sure up there.
In the very beginning run-DMC, also public enemy was good...
Me I like tupac over biggie I definitely get some sturred up emotions when I listen to him.. it's too big though, different days different feelings goes with different music.. Man for that just plain WOOOOOW factor and hilarity ludacris is good. Also I like NAS' stories, he can paint those pictures really well for me... Damn and honesly busta rhymes, red/method man haha, that stuff right there causes muscle spazms it's rediculously good beat n flow... c'mon.. Gang Starr has that waaaaaaaaay back sound it's good too just chillax n do whatever to with that mood they put on... Theres pleny of em out there juss People have grown in different eras and will always give you different answers, just my opinion if I had more time and was really willing I'd write pages and pages. I know theres plenty more important and insparational, and yeah yeah yeah I know I know...
sooooo wifff that kinda quick mindset I think the greatest artist TO ME- Lesane Parish Crooks
