2pac - unquestionably the greatest hiphop 'artist' to ever grace the mic. He's true evidence that hiphop is an art; there are others as well, but he's the greatest. And there's no doubt about that. In fact, if one were to choose someone else, the decison would be a result of responding to one's own tendencies, inclinations and liking. But if one were to take a real look, totally objectively at hiphop and it's artists, one could only really choose 2pac as the greatest artist to ever grace the mic.

Around the hero everything turns into tragedy; around the demi-god, into a satyr play; and around God--what? perhaps into "world"?--

I would have to go with Jay-z lyrically, but i guess to others it depends on their ear for hip hop. Watch out for Lupe Fiasco. This guy lyrical ability is unmatched, especially how he uses today's world crisis in his stories

Mos Def and NAS are my faves. Honorable mention to A Tribe Called Quest, EPMD, Eric B & Rakim, and Cypress Hill!

Many have already been said and the ones that I agree with are:
NaS, Mos Def, Rakim, Method Man

So I'll just add one more:
Black Thought
