You guys are either throwing out commercial BS or the a-typical Tupac/Biggie answer... Dont get me wrong.. Tupac and Biggie are the greats... but the best lyrically? I dont think so...

Lyrically:
Jedi Mind Trick
Mos Def/Talib Kwelli
Immortal Techniques

Musically there are so many good beats/music... hard to say...

Just my opinion

Well, it depends on what you call hip hop. Although the line is hazy right now, there is a difference between hip hop and rap. Hip hop was, as KRS-one put it, a movement or a means of expression to motivate or help people cope with the harsh realities of life. Rap is based moreso on the commercial aspect or music where most tend to guess and mimic the sound of what it hott right now in the clubs (i.e.: what sells). You can listen to the radio and easily tell which is which.

Now, to the question at hand--who is greatist hip hop artist? Nas summed it all up perfectly on Ether, 'Who's the best? Pac? Nas? or BIG? Ain't no best! ' I only say that because this is a never-ending debate of diversified tastes where at the end of the day, all that we will really accomplish is that there are too many people that like music!

I would definitely say 2Pac.. because his lyrics had poetry in them .. I mean they told a proper story and you really felt it. Nowadays its all just about 22" rims, ho's and bling.... I would also say Eminem's style is pretty good because he too tells a story and the way he delivers it - his style of rapping is pretty unique.

There are plenty of greats that have been mentioned. I can only add Guru and Big Daddy Kane. In my opinion though, nobody has ever done it better than Rakim.

In the modern era, taking into account ability along with hits, sells and longevity, I say it's a toss up between L.L. & Jay - Jay is the more gifted mc but LL has hits in 3 decades.

Must underrated - RZA. Mad lyrics and flow.
Bo Jackson of hiphop - Lauryn Hill. Imagine if she ONLY did hip hop.
