saving pics - 03-20-2003, 05:01 PM

Hi all, Got a stupid computer question here. When I try to save pictures to my hard drive, sometimes I can save them as jpeg's but most of the time only as a bitmap. Does anybody know why this happens? Thanks.

When they appear as .bmp take out the password from the url.. like this

http://usernameassword@www.site.com/pic.jpg

this will become a .bmp..

so remove it so it reads..

http://www.site.com/pic.jpg the password should be stored in cache anyway..

i found that if you save the whole page by going to the top left corner and click file save as

and once the page is saved on your computer go into the file remove the pic and trash the rest you will have the jpeg you set out to get

You can convert any bitmaps you have lying around into jpegs by using an image converter. This one gives you 30 free goes (unlimited number of converts per go) before you decline the offer to buy. It depends how many pics you save ( I save maybe 3 to 6 pics a week , so I use it about every 4 - 6 weeks, giving me about 3 years before I need a new one):

ps - Am I alone in that I never have looked at any of the pics I have saved? I can't resist saving a great pic, but never look at again. All I do when I save it is also set it as wallpaper on my desktop......until the next one comes along.

I must have had a pic file the size of China, until I recently cleared it out. I relaized I NEVER looked at any of them. I was just going to delete them one at a time, but I kept saying no thats a good one and that is too...I ended up with the same mass I had in the beggining....delete 'em all they make more. Like pulling off a band-aid.

manually log in to the site and your problem is solved. Also saving the whole page as a file will not always work. It will die as soon as the pass does. Get a picture downloader like mihov or others from zdnet.com and let it do the work for you. Although it doesnt work on all sites.

@fireballer37

Are you using IE? I find that I get this problem in IE only...even on regular sites like CNN or whatever. Netscape has never been a problem.
