Post TiVo Buys Six New Patents From IBM - 04-10-2005, 04:16 AM

Thomas Hawk writes "TiVo reported in an 8-K filing today that on March 31, 2005 they purchased six new patents from IBM. The patents purchased reportedly have to do with audience research and measurement, integration of television signals with internet access, automatic rescheduling of recordings, content screening, enhanced program information search and electronic program guide interface enhancements. For those of you privacy advocates out there you will love Patent No. 5,872,588: Method and apparatus for monitoring audio-visual materials presented to a subscriber. " The link has very little additional information.

A friend and I were talking about television a lot in the last little while. He has Digital Cable and I have a dish, we both watch a fair amount of shows. The technology that the PVR by TIVO would have the potential to do is great.
We were thinking that if the service providers (Satellite or cable) would offer a small (2-3$ rebate a month) rebate in exchange for polling your viewing; the numbers gained would be more accurate (at least by household – not individual). I hate the fact that so few people decide what I watch when I could have impact on the final product *shrugs*. Once again I know that isn’t the case for many people with the fear of private information leaking and such…

How well do you know this friend.A lot of people say that about him. What is your real name? And then what happened? Why do you hate the fact that so few people decide what he or she watch when he or she could have impact on the final product *shrugs* so much? When? Again, Who told you that?
