Firmware is like a program for hardware... kind of like a motherboards bios.
You'll see that there are many companies out there that will support there hardware with updates on the native programs. My Sony burner couldn't overburn (or even burn more than a 650meg CD at one time) and I got the new firmware (a while back) and voila perfect functions!

This Has Nothing To Do With FirmWare Or Drivers. This Is A WindowXP Thing SomeThing FuckUp Your Register. The Best Thing Is To Do A New Install.
