Internet Explorer Hack Just By Browsing - 06-28-2004, 05:12 PM

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/06/25/virus_hits_websites/

Quote:
Security experts have expressed serious concern about recently-discovered flaws in Internet Explorer that seem to be the focus of an insidious attack.
Many popular websites, including search engines and shopping sites, have been secretly hacked and have had mysterious code placed on their Web servers. When a user running Internet Explorer logs on to a contaminated site, the user's PC is infected with malicious code, which has the potential to cause further problems.

This is what everyone has been really frightened about for a while now," said Conor Flynn, technical director with Rits Information Security in Dublin. The fear is rooted in the fact that there is no patch from Microsoft for the flaws, nor is there any indication that a patch is on the verge of being released.
So basically, just by browsing using internet explorer, your computer can become infected, keyloggers etc can be installed, which will transmit details as soon as you type them (eg Credit Card Details etc). Now has this convinced you to switch to firefox?

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Firefox is so much better than IE anyway... Just switch to it, you can make it as simple or as complex as you like, by adding extentions, to improve your browsing experience, there are many themes available to download, the browser is fully W3C compient (unlike IE) plus there is tabbed browsing (which is great, but can be disabled if you dont like it), and its much faster than IE. Basically its a browser that you can modify to suit your needs, without the many security concerns that IE has associated with it.

******

"rm -f ie
cp ../../../../mozillafirefox mozillafirefoxrules ."

*Switch To Mozilla Firefox*

I agree with you about not using IE ******, but I tried firefox and its not to my liking, its good but too many bugs in it for me, I'll stick with opera for all purpose surfing and netscape (for hebrew websites)

thank you very much.

Well aslong as your not using IE... I dont know which bugs your talking about though, of course there are a few (though I have not noticed any in Firefox 0.9), but there are far more in Opera in my opinion and there are bugs to be expected in any program...

True, but I ahven't noticed any bugs in opera yet, only problem i have with opera is that the hebrew is reading backwards so i have to read:
"This Is Opera" ... Like this: "Opera Is This"

which is annoying, and doesn't happen in firefox 0.9

But firefox 0.9 sometimes decides that I can't use the back feature, and sometimes decides to be all blury, and if you put the bookmarks bar on all the windows will shake, and the text is very blurry in the menues and the url box. It works fast and nice, but too many problems for me.

I also agree with you about IE ******. I have found that Avant is the browser that I like the most over everything I've tried. I guess it's just a matter of opinion. As long as we all get away from the Microshaft stuff I think things will be all good.

Just installed firefox, seamlessly imported everything from IE and started right up, now to try and find my way around in it and put it through the paces.

Oh no... You do know that avant browser IS Internet Explorer, just with a different interface... It actually uses the internet explorer on your system to run it.... DONT use it if you want to quit using IE... But you know, you can customise FireFox to look identical to avant browser.

Congratulations... Other than the nice installation process how are you finding the browser overall?

Forget the themes, go straight for extentions... youll be playing around with these for days... Then when youve played with them, find yourself a nice theme if you like... Ive personally left the original theme for FireFox 0.9, because theyve made it look alot better than the old FireFox 0.8...
