Run Flat Tires -- Opinions? - 04-10-2009, 05:11 AM

I've recently been looking at purchasing a BMW, however I've found that there have been many complaints with the run flat tires that they come with. Has anyone had any problems with run flats? Are they worth the money that they cost?

well, those complaints are not missguided...everything from the 1 series to the X5 are plagued with run-flats. If you like to drive a car and get a BMW for the driving experience, immediately put on a set of Michelins or Bridgestones on it. The run-flats ruin the ride and performance. The car feels heavy and brick-like. Backseat passengers complain a lot about my brother in law's X3

Run-flats are pointless. They're designed to run for only 40 or so miles once you have a flat. The problem is that the majority of flat tires occur without your noticing, at least until you actually see the tire is deflated. They're supposed to be designed for you to be able to drive the extra few miles to a tire shop or whatever. But that doesn't really make sense.

I say just avoid them. They're a dumb luxury feature.

Couldn't agree more. Get yourself some good quality Michelin tires.

I've had them for the past 4 years - no problems.

If you replace your runflats with standard tires, is there room in a BMW (3 or 5 series) for a spare?

I know someone who removed the run flats and opted for regular. The solution is to just bring along a can of instant tire inflation but it tends to ruin the tire. All in all using the can to re inflate the tire and buying one tire is cheaper and just as good a solution.

Interesting. I hadn't thought of the instant tire inflation stuff. Good call.

IŽd take "normal" tires and a regular spare wheel. Changing it might take you several minutes but then you can drive with normal speed and for the distance you like or have to go. The only thing you have to take care of is checking the spare wheel pressure from time to time.
