people take sports to seriously - 10-21-2008, 03:43 AM

I remember going on a field trip to a baseball game with my class in gr7.
Halfway through the game, a stray foul ball flies inches from my head and hits an 8yo kid in the face, and it was fast i could literally hear it wiz (zzziiiing) by my head.

the kid behind was out cold, his face was all bloody and teeth were died red from the blood, but no one seemed to care, all they cared about was getting that stupid ball from under the seats, they were scattering around like drunken ants.
the parents had to bring in the paramedics in and the kid was hauled out on a stretcher, but what i found really odd was, the dad stayed and finished watching the game.... WTF!.

not to mention everybody just ignored it and acted like nothing happened, no mention of it what so ever, are people that brainwashed that they care more about a stupid ball than a little kid, damn!.

to this day ive hated competitive sports, the people turn fucked up when there watching competitive sports, and most of them cant even run 6 feet without hufing and puffing.

ever go to a little league game and listen to the parents screaming like a bunch of retards, like looouuuud screaming... anger screams whether or not they are angry, i always felt like saying "the kids cant hear you, so would you mind shutting your trap!", but i rather keep the peace.

im not saying sports are bad, you can have fun playing sports, games are supposed to be fun, what i would give to see both sides that came for their team smiling no matter who put that stupid piece of rubber through whatever goal.

aaaaahhhhhhhh thank you.

Yeah exactly, and with pro sports, the more money involved, the more crazier it gets.

Agreed yes. It's sad if it is really true that the dad stayed at the game.

Studies by Cialdini showed that once people who's sports club they linked themselves with won, felt more secure about themselves. If the clubs lost a match, they felt less secure (about other issues then that specific sport).

So people tend to find (need?) a re-assurance about their own status/feelings in the accomplishments of other groups of people in sport. Sad if you think about it. Also the concept that so many people spend much time on watching sports, but hardly do it themselves, which would be healthier for both their mind and their body.

Aaaand… to (sort of) quote Noam Chomsky, if people (especially in the USA) felt as comfortable with demanding detailed information about (local) political decisions as they do with their club coaches, well, the democracy would be more a democracy if you get my point.

Ah… bread and circus as the romans said.

Here's one for you dumb.

It's sad when people start bickering about sports, discussing at great length whether or not a player was great, the referee was fair, etc...
I tend to chip in stereotypical comments whenever that happen, but more out of fun than conviction. Sure, I'd like to see the German soccer team win a championship again, but I'm not going to start hating people just because they insult Ballack or the team itself.
Anyways, I wonder how a team loosing affects people in the long term - I was down after we lost to Italy in 2004, but ten minutes later I was okay again, having fun at live.
It's always surprising how worked up some people get - ever had someone scream at the TV during a game? My father does that all the time, it's rather embarrassing.

Oh, and that dad is a prime example of bad parenting - how can you care more for a game than your kid?

Yeah same happens here too, some guys who are really insane about Soccer (football) just take it so fucking seriously that you can't even have a positive disucsion with each one of them....they are just convinced that this team or that one is their whole life...they might not agree that his boy or girl get into a relation with the opposite sex if he/she doesn't like the same game, team,or even the Tshirt color....I consider this too insane man....you should maintain balance within your personal & outside life !

ahaha!, i would have rather seen that happen to the dad, funny pic, not to mention its a bat... not even a ball.

I do find myself enjoying a ufc fight or maybe a boxing match every now and then (i was raised with martial arts), but i honestly don't care who wins, its just exciting to see what happens next, its always a random outcome, but i can miss a fight i was anticipating and not give a crap, its not like its a big deal, just a source of entertainment, and id much rather go for a walk than sit and watch sports.

My friend punched a hole in my wall because our local team didn't catch a ball in baseball. Of course he did say sorry and fixed it himself but he did finish watching the game. Kinda odd I thought but it seems like that's pretty common. The way I see it is a sport, of any kind, is a way to escape your own life. I don't think this is bad because sometimes you just want a break and watch something that doesn't involve you. I understand talking about sports as well because it is small talk. Catching up about what a player got in a certain game that weak is something that makes people have something in common. Then there is of course the fact that you can have home pride, you know the whole my home town has this better than yours. So that is all good and fun in a healthy amount but then there is the extreme. A ball knocks out your kid and you keep sipping on your beer watching the game? Get your priorities right man! Sports are cool, games are cool, but come on. When I lived in Europe things got crazy at soccer games when the local team lost. I remember glass bottles being thrown at the refs and security taking people down. I'm not sure what my point is anymore but I think it was something like sports are alright but not when you start killing people over them.

i would like to say... "blame it on the parents", but not sure how much proof is behind that.

It's just a game, people need to relax and remember that. Takes all the fun from it..

I hate when, say, a team I like loses against a team that one of my friends like, then they just can't let it go and annoy the hell outta you whenever you mention the team. It's so annoying. You're right, people do need to relax.
