I had a similar problem e.g with files from sexybabes-tv wmv files.
I cound not open these with any codec I tried.
Now I´ve updated my browser to Netscape 7.02 and now they are working - that sounds strange but I made a retest and downlowed files with my old Netscape 4.7 and they did not work. I have no idea what´s the reason but perhaps it helps you

been there and done this a few times. I have no idea what the fcuk micrsoft do in all these versions other than make them too fcuking complicated. Your a great deal better sticking with the early versions and only upgrading if you REALLY have to for some specific function. Plus AVI's are the worst for problems. MPG will play if half the file is missing. I reinstalled 7.1 the other day and my PC is still convinced i have version 9. LOL

Usually most of the problems are codec related. Search on the web and install all you find but be carefull with the new DiVx ones. Try to use only the lastest you need. Most sites will tell you the version you need. Also its worth while keeping a directory of the codec you download for future install. What plays today might not tomorrow and the codec might be very hard to find.
