Why don't you just look at this whole thing the way I do.
When I arrive to a new forum, even if I have no way of contributing, I feel weird to just say thank you to other people's threads. I always say thank you for stuff I actually use, but I always try and find my niche wherever since I feel obligated to have even a little content to my posts, and not just thank you notes.

So even if 99% of my posts would be a thank you and I'll have only 1% of something else, I'll be pleased, because I know that I actually like the place I take from more than just for the taking of stuff I need.

And by the way, I'm speaking of places that won't demote you for lack of participation, it's just a feeling I have and I think that is what it should be
