It depends on the thread and the issues it covers, some threads simply went into obscurity because the thread starter left or was banned, and it's a reasonable bet, that over time, someone will find it and revive it.
However, some threads definitely need closing as they're no longer relevant, i.e. software that's so far out of date it doesn't warrant being left open, dead link threads are the same.
One thread that was brought to my attention was a 5 yr old request that a new member said he'd try to fill, unfortunately for him, the requester had been banned anyway.
I think it good in some ways that pass dumps are left open as it gives novice crackers a chance to see the advances made in website security over a period of time, who knows, maybe someone will find an actually working pass.
All in all, threads outside of a certain time scale are no longer needed, thus they should be archived and placed in their own category, that way we can ignore them.
